Sales & Use Tax Exemption
California exempts medicinal cannabis from state sales and use tax for patients who hold a valid county-issued MMIC. A physician's recommendation on its own does not create the exemption — you have to apply to your county health department for the card. Rates and rules are set by the state and change; verify current rates with the CDTFA before you budget around them.
Higher Possession Limit
Health & Safety Code §11362.77 currently lets a qualified patient possess up to eight ounces of dried cannabis, above the adult-use limit. Confirm current limits with the Department of Cannabis Control.
Access at 18+
California currently allows patients aged 18 and over to obtain medicinal cannabis with a valid physician's recommendation, whereas adult-use sales are restricted to 21 and over.
Expanded Cultivation
Adult-use rules cap home cultivation at 6 plants. The medical baseline in §11362.77 is six mature or twelve immature plants, and a physician may document a greater amount where it is medically necessary. Cities and counties set their own cultivation ordinances on top of state law — check yours.
Medicinal-Only Products
California permits higher per-package THC limits on some medicinal products than on adult-use equivalents. Availability depends on the dispensary and on current Department of Cannabis Control rules.
Out-of-State Recognition
Some states recognise out-of-state medical documentation, but the rules differ state by state and change often. Check the destination state's own program before you travel — we can't promise another state will accept your California paperwork.

County Registry Fees
The state MMIC is issued by your county health department, which charges its own separate fee. That fee is paid to the county, not to us. We can help you prepare the paperwork.
What Your Fee Pays For
You are paying for a physician's time and independent clinical judgement, whatever conclusion they reach. No fee here is contingent on being issued a recommendation, and no one at this clinic can promise you one in advance.
California Eligibility Standards
Proposition 215 lets a California-licensed physician recommend cannabis for a listed condition, or for any other illness for which it may provide relief. Whether that applies to you is a clinical question only the physician can answer, after an actual evaluation.
Residency
Clinical verification requires a current California residential status and a valid Government-issued ID.
Age 18+
Adults 18 and older qualify for independent clinical assessment, bypassing 21+ recreational restrictions.
Minors (<18)
Patients under 18 qualify through parental consent and a designated clinical caregiver registration.

The Next Step: Your County MMIC
A physician's recommendation and the state MMIC are two different things. The recommendation comes from the physician you meet here. The Medical Marijuana Identification Card (MMIC) is issued by your county health department under the program CDPH administers — you apply to the county in person, pay their fee, and they issue the card. Holding a valid MMIC is what exempts medicinal purchases from state sales and use tax. We do not issue MMICs and cannot guarantee your county will approve one.

Employment Rights (AB 2188)
AB 2188 restricts most employers from discriminating based on off-duty cannabis use away from work, and limits hiring tests for non-psychoactive metabolites. Exceptions apply to building and construction trades and to federal and DOT-regulated roles.

Caregiver Rights & Rules
The "Primary Caregiver" Definition
Under Health & Safety Code Section 11362.7, a caregiver must consistently assume responsibility for housing, health, or safety of the patient. Must be 18+ and provide actual care.
Caregiver Limits
A primary caregiver may possess and transport up to 8 ounces of dried cannabis and cultivate up to 6 mature or 12 immature plants per patient served. Local ordinances and current state rules apply — confirm before you rely on these figures.

Some states recognise out-of-state medical cannabis documentation and some do not. The rules differ by state, change frequently, and several visitor programmes have been narrowed or withdrawn in recent years. Treat the summary below as a prompt to check, not as an answer.
