Novi has one of the largest Japanese communities in the Midwest, most of it connected to the automotive supply chain and a good part of it here on assignment rather than permanently. That makes one point matter more in this city than almost anywhere else in Michigan. Cannabis remains a Schedule I controlled substance under federal law, and federal immigration authorities apply federal law. A Michigan registry card protects nobody who is not a US citizen. If you hold a visa or a green card, speak to an immigration attorney before you register — not after.
The same holds at any border, in either direction. A Michigan card has no standing outside Michigan, and other countries' drug laws are frequently far stricter than this one's; what is lawful here can be a serious matter at another airport. Separately, the visit itself is conducted in English. If the medical vocabulary isn't yours, bring someone who can help you follow it — that is normal and you don't need to arrange it with us beforehand. Ask the physician to slow down or repeat anything. A certification conversation you didn't fully follow isn't worth having.

Who actually issues the card
We don't. The Michigan Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA) does. Michigan's medical marijuana program is administered by the Cannabis Regulatory Agency, which took over the functions previously handled under LARA. The state — not this clinic — issues the registry card and sets its own processing times. If the physician certifies you, we file the certification on your behalf — but we can't promise a date, and nobody who tells you otherwise can either.
Questions from Novi patients
I'm in Michigan on a work visa. Can I register?
State residency rules and federal immigration law are separate questions, and the second is the serious one. Cannabis is federally illegal, and the immigration consequences for non-citizens can be severe regardless of what Michigan permits. Speak to an immigration attorney before anything else. A physician cannot advise you on this.
Can a family member interpret during the visit?
Yes. Visits are conducted in English and you're welcome to have someone with you. Tell the physician at the start so they pace the conversation for it rather than assuming you've followed.
Does the card mean anything if I travel to another state or back home?
No. It is a Michigan program with effect in Michigan. Other states set their own rules on recognising out-of-state cards, and international travel is governed by the destination country's law, which may be far harsher than Michigan's. Don't travel with anything.
My assignment here is temporary. Is this still worth doing?
The registry requires Michigan residency, and cards expire and need recertification. If you expect to leave the state within a year or two, raise it during the visit — the physician can tell you plainly whether it makes practical sense in your circumstances.
